MediaTek has terminated the deal to acquire Enpirion, the power management solutions and controller product line under Intel’s Programmable Solutions Group.

The acquisition process, starting last year, would cost MediaTek US$85 million.

Enpirion’s product line has been a series of system-on-a-chip DC-to-DC power converters. The acquisition was interpreted as MediaTek’s plan to strengthen its ASIC business, targeting AI acceleration for hyperscalers. Apart from the SoCs, Enpirion also offers voltage bus converters, DDR memory terminators, high frequency technology, and 70A power rails.

Intel intended to sell the product line so the Programmable Solutions Group could focus on its core FPGA business and increase investment in high-growth opportunities that help position Intel to win key transitions to support 5G, edge computing, artificial intelligence, and the cloud.
